Lubrication prevents this erratic movement and reduces metal fatigue. In humid areas, rust acts like sandpaper between coils, making the wire brittle. A high-quality lubricant seals the metal to lock out moisture and prevent sudden failure.

Choosing the Right Lubricant

Maintenance success depends on using the correct product. Avoid heavy grease or standard WD-40. Thick grease attracts dust and grit, creating an abrasive paste that grinds down the metal.

Professionals recommend silicone or lithium-based sprays. These “dry” lubricants penetrate between coils without attracting debris. Specialized garage door sprays keep components clean while significantly reducing friction.

Proper Maintenance Technique

Keep the door closed to expose the most surface area on the coils. Use a clean rag to wipe away old dirt or gunked-up grease. Spray the lubricant along the entire length of the spring.
